The Tales Candy Can Tell

In the spirit of Halloween I searched the collection looking for something unique to share. I came across a small candy tin with two ships on the lid. The name across the front said Riley’s Rum and Butter (Flavoured) Toffee, which sounded fun so I started to research.

Earlier this month I posted a picture of the cover of Life Magazine from 1955 showing our beautifulLancasterEagle. Last weekend I just happened to be browsing in the Clifton Forge Antique Mall and saw stack upon stack of Life Magazine’s. Sifting through them, I managed to find a copy of the one with our eagle. Even though we already have one in our library, I went ahead and picked it up to put in our object file so anyone looking through the file for research will have quick access to it.

It’s really fun to see a colored shot from that time period as we mostly have black and white images. I also enjoy trying to see if I can recognize the other pieces in the background. The figurehead directly behind the eagle is Semiramis (ca 1894-1930) from the steam yacht纳拉达(ex.半室). The figurehead on the wall to the left is Merrie Monarch, attributed to the shipMerrie Monarchbuilt in 1859 by J.H. Martin in St. Martins, New Brunswick. Also to the left is a model of the Dollar Line representing two of their ships,President Hoover和President柯立芝，这两者都于1931年开始服务。这是第一个在30年代初期由我们的Shipmodel Builders授权建造的模型。在画廊的后壁上可以部分看到具有蓝色背景的半模型。这件作品是1939年的船大不列颠和was built for showcase in the New York World’s Fair. Artifact of the Month – Great Eastern

As I continue to comb through and photograph our print/poster collection, I am constantly finding pieces that depict incredibly interesting bits of history. In most cases, bits I never even knew existed, which spurs me to research and learn more. One print I found earlier this week shows the steamship大东方(1858-1888) on a sandbar covered in advertisements for all kinds of activities available on board, including horse races, a concert and the Swiss Giantess. It’s quite amazing to look at and so I decided to make it the artifact of the month for October.
