Presented by John V. Quarstein, director emeritus of the USSMonitorCenter
Join us for a virtual lecture with author and historian John V. Quarstein, director emeritus of the USSMonitorCenter. Quarstein will give a presentation on ironclads built during and after the Civil War that were successful on a different level.
About the presentation:
The success of USSMonitorat Hampton Roads had a considerable impact on Union naval shipbuilding. Turreted monitors became the rage, and 40 were built during and immediately after the end of hostilities. Nevertheless, there were other ironclad types built in East Coast shipyards that achieved levels of success. Various designs were evident in USSNew Ironsides,Galena,Dunderberg,Stevens Battery(Naugatuck),Keokuk, andSpuyten
Devil(Stromboli). Although many of these ships never made it into active service or were considered failures, they remain a tribute to Northern industrial power and ingenuity.
