Each artifact presents a different challenge to conservators as they seek to stabilize the damage done by nearly 140 years of immersion in saltwater. In the Batten Conservation Laboratory Complex, visitors can take a close-up look at how the ironclad’s turret, steam engine, Dahlgren shell guns, and other components are being preserved for future generations.
The Mariners’ Museum Library is home to over two million items including books, magazines, manuscripts, maps and charts, newspaper articles, photographs, and archives, making it the largest maritime history collection in the Western Hemisphere.
