Ed Offley’s latest book,The Burning Shore, is a history of the German U-boats that prowled America’s waters and wreaked havoc in the early days of the war. It tells the story ofU-701, which laid mines across the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in June 1942, and its captain, Horst Degen. It also tells the story of the American attempts to stop the U-boat attacks and the building of the planes which eventually stopped the threat. It tells the story of one American pilot, Lieutenant Harry Kane, who dropped the bombs that sankU-701, and of Kane and Degen’s remarkable friendship after the war.
