Burnside recruited a Coastal Division and planned the expedition in concert with Flag Officer Louis Goldsborough’s North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. This combined force captured Roanoke Island on February 8\, 1862\, and destroyed Flag Officer William Lynch’s North Carolina Squadron at Elizabeth City.
